Why is retail customer service so bad in urban areas?

I live in an area of NJ that within a 10 mile radius there are some very affluent towns, some blue collar, and then not-so-great towns. You know, urban, densely populated, mostly minorities (all kinds). The kind of towns people struggle to move out of.

Why is it that all the retail chains (Home Depot, Target, Best Buy, et) closer to the urban areas have PITIFUL customer service?!

The clerks openly complain about working there. They joke around w/each other, ignore customers. At Target, Ive had several checkout clerks not say a WORD to me. Not boo, not hello, nothing!

Good luck getting a Q answered!

The bigger question is WHY don’t the stores do something about this? Why is this status quo, that’s the way it is, what do you expect attitude being perpetuated by BOTH the customers and employees?

I am not stupid, I know these aren’t the greatest jobs in the world. But I have found the worst customer service to be in urban stores. It should not have to be this way!
Response to “look at the people that live there”.

I have never met a black, hispanic, or asian person who PREFERS bad customer service. EVERYONE appreciates respect and courtesy, even minorities.

I wish I could disagree but its true. I wish I could tell you why they don’t do anything about it, but I will tell you one thing Wal mart is really bad at doing this.
